A calorie counter that lives in WhatsApp

See how HeyCoach sets calorie and protein targets, logs meals from text or photos, handles corrections, tracks weight and what it costs in WhatsApp.

HeyCoach is a calorie counter and nutrition coach that runs entirely inside WhatsApp. It sets calorie and macro targets, estimates meals from text, photos or voice, waits for confirmation, tracks weight and lets you correct an entry in a reply. Text logging is free. Photo and voice logging are Pro features after a seven-day free trial.

There is no separate app, account dashboard or food-database screen. That is the point—and also the main trade-off.

What it does in the first minute

Message “hi.” HeyCoach asks what you are working toward, the reason if you want to share it, biological sex for the standard equation, age, height, weight, normal activity and preferred pace. It uses Mifflin–St Jeor to estimate resting needs, applies a conservative activity factor and reveals a calorie, protein, carbohydrate and fat target.

For weight loss, automatic calorie targets will not go below 1,200 kcal for women, 1,500 for men or 1,350 when sex is unspecified. Those are product guardrails, not individualized medical advice.

A sample setup might end like this:

Your daily target: 1,750 kcal · P 135 g · C 170 g · F 53 g. Sound good?

You can accept it or say “set calories to 1,900.” The lower guardrail still applies. The target is a starting estimate; weight and intake trends make it more useful over time.

What a real day of logging looks like

The following messages mirror the product's actual flow. Exact estimates depend on your food.

Breakfast by text

You:

Two eggs, sourdough toast and about a teaspoon of butter.

HeyCoach returns a meal card listing the assumed portions, calories, protein, carbohydrate and fat. Nothing is saved until you choose Log it, Fix it or Cancel.

After confirmation, the running line might read:

Logged ✅ Today: 390 / 1,750 kcal · P 22/135 g
1,360 left—room for a proper meal.

Lunch by photo

You send a photo of a chicken rice bowl. The estimate lists chicken, rice, vegetables, sauce and assumed oil. It might total 680 kcal and 48 g protein.

You:

It was half that rice and there was no cheese.

The card updates before logging. The correction matters because a camera cannot see exact depth or hidden ingredients. Photo logging is faster, not magical measurement. Read how photo calorie estimates work for the accuracy limits.

A branded snack

You:

One 170 g strawberry Greek yogurt, here's the label.

For recognizable packaged and chain items, HeyCoach can use official published nutrition rather than eyeballing appearance. The serving still matters. If the pot contains two servings, the label is not the amount eaten.

Dinner from a menu

Send the restaurant menu and ask what fits the 650 calories left. The menu advisor can propose choices, then log the one you order. At a chain, official nutrition is preferred. At an independent restaurant, the answer remains an estimate.

At night, Pro users can receive a short summary with calories, protein, meal count and streak. The tone treats tomorrow as a reset, not a punishment.

Corrections are a core feature

Most food logs fail politely: they accept a wrong entry and make repairing it annoying. HeyCoach assumes estimates will need corrections.

Reply to a meal card:

only half the bowl, no cheese

Or later:

lunch yesterday had a full tablespoon of oil

The system can update recent entries and totals. It also supports undoing a meal and saving repeated meals under a name such as “my everyday smoothie.” Log the saved meal later with those exact known numbers.

This does not eliminate memory error. It lowers the cost of being honest when better information appears.

Exercise and weight

You can log exercise by text:

Ran, watch says 420 calories.

Or send a fitness-app screenshot. The burn appears beside the base target and extends the day's displayed budget. Wearable calorie estimates can be wrong, so treating every reported calorie as food earned may overstate the adjustment. Use a consistent policy and judge it against the weight trend.

Log body weight with a short message:

weight 82.4

HeyCoach keeps the series and can summarize the week. Daily numbers are noisy; the trend is the point.

What it remembers

HeyCoach stores your profile, goal, targets, recent meals, weights, billing state, saved meals and preferences you ask it to remember. It uses recent conversation context so “make that half” can refer to the right meal.

You can ask what it remembers and tell it to forget an item. Photos are stored to support meal processing. Read the privacy policy for current retention, vendors and deletion instructions before sending health-related information.

Do not send information you would not want processed by WhatsApp, the service and its model providers. Convenience and privacy are both real parts of the choice.

What it will not do

It will not measure a plate exactly

Photos cannot reveal hidden oil, a recipe or precise portion depth. HeyCoach shows estimates and asks for confirmation. If you need weighed precision, use a kitchen scale and a conventional database.

It will not replace medical care

HeyCoach is a nutrition coach, not a medical service. It does not diagnose or prescribe. Lab-report insights are limited to food choices; treatment belongs with your doctor.

It is not a full nutrient-analysis dashboard

It tracks calories and macros well. If you need dozens of micronutrients, clinical reports, CSV analysis or a giant searchable diary, an app such as Cronometer may fit better.

It still depends on WhatsApp

“No app” means no additional nutrition app. You need WhatsApp and its supported account/device environment. People who avoid Meta services should choose another method.

It cannot make consistency automatic

The conversation reduces steps, but you still send the meal. Evening check-ins and streaks can prompt the habit; they cannot eat or log for you.

Who it is for

HeyCoach fits people who know roughly what to do but stop using calorie apps because searching and tapping becomes tedious. It also fits first-time trackers who want numbers explained in ordinary language.

It is a poor fit for someone who enjoys a detailed spreadsheet, needs disease-specific medical nutrition therapy, or wants every vitamin visualized.

A worked time comparison: four 90-second manual app entries take six minutes a day, or 42 minutes a week. Four 20-second messages take about nine minutes a week. Those are illustrative times, not guarantees; the question is whether the saved friction changes what you do on day 40.

Research on mobile dietary self-monitoring finds that frequent, consistent use is associated with weight loss, while strict completeness is not always the best predictor. A lightweight imperfect log can be useful precisely because it survives ordinary life.

FAQ

Is the WhatsApp calorie counter free?

Text logging, targets, corrections, coaching and weight tracking are free up to 20 messages per day. New accounts receive seven days of Pro free without a card; Pro photo and voice logging costs $4.99 monthly or $39.99 yearly afterward.

Do I need to download HeyCoach?

No separate app. HeyCoach is a WhatsApp conversation. You do need WhatsApp itself.

Can it count calories from a photo?

Yes, on the trial or Pro plan. It identifies foods and proposes portions and macros, then waits for confirmation. Hidden ingredients and depth remain uncertain, so review and correct the assumptions.

Can I change a meal after logging it?

Yes. Reply to a recent meal card with the correction, such as “half the rice,” and the entry and totals update. You can also remove a meal.
