A calorie deficit is the gap between energy used and energy eaten. The calculator estimates a starting intake and initial weekly gap, then shows two different timelines: the familiar flat conversion and a simplified curve in which weight loss slows.

Both dates are scenarios, not deadlines. They show you what two different assumptions do to the same deficit; your body will write its own version.

Start with calories you can actually use

The starting calculation matches HeyCoach: Mifflin–St Jeor resting energy, an activity factor of 1.2, 1.45 or 1.65, then a pace-based reduction. Requested loss of 0.25, 0.5 or 0.75 kg/week corresponds to reductions of 275, 550 or 825 kcal/day.

Targets have a safe floor: 1,200 kcal for women, 1,500 for men and 1,350 for the unspecified midpoint estimate. If the floor raises your target, both timelines run on the remaining estimated deficit, not the larger reduction you asked for.

Why show two dates?

The flat estimate divides the desired weight change by a constant energy conversion:

Days = kilograms to lose × 7,700 ÷ initial daily deficit

It assumes the first week's deficit lasts the whole way. Eat a fixed number of calories and it does not: the gap shrinks as you get lighter, because a lighter body burns less.

Exactly what the slowing model assumes

The slowing model uses about 24 kcal/day per kilogram of eventual change, with half of that change reached in about one year. Those two figures become a first-order curve:

Loss after t days = (initial deficit ÷ 24) × (1 − 2^(−t/365))

The parameters are informed by Hall and colleagues' dynamic-weight research. The curve is a simplified sketch of that work, not the full NIDDK Body Weight Planner and not a model of you in particular. Hall et al., energy imbalance and body weight

It holds intake and activity fixed and ignores body compartments, sodium, glycogen, medication, illness and the days you do not stick to the plan. It is a way to see how a deficit slows, not a tool for engineering a harsher one.

A worked comparison

Imagine initial maintenance of 2,500 kcal/day, food intake of 2,000, and a goal to lose 10 kg.

The flat estimate is 10 × 7,700 ÷ 500, or 154 days.

The slowing curve has an eventual change of 500 ÷ 24, or about 20.8 kg. Solving the curve for a 10-kg change gives roughly 344 days. The calculator translates those durations into calendar dates from today.

Neither number is a verdict on your body. The gap between them is the price of assuming a fixed food reduction means a fixed rate forever.

When no date is shown

If the safe floor leaves no deficit, there is no timeline to show. If the loss you want is more than the curve's eventual change, the tool says so: at that fixed intake, the date never arrives.

Dates more than ten years away are withheld too; a precise calendar day that far out would claim a confidence the model does not have.

If no date appears, the answer is not a lower calorie input. It is a different goal, or a better look at the trend. Revisit the goal and the activity setting, and for a more detailed scenario use the official NIDDK planner.

How to check the plan in practice

Keep a reasonably complete record, weekends, drinks, oils and portions included. If weighing suits you, weigh under the same conditions and compare trends, not days. A salty dinner or a new workout can shift enough water to hide several days of real change.

The weekly number shown is the starting gap. In the slowing model it shrinks as your weight changes, even at the same intake.
