TDEE explained: why calculators disagree and what to trust
Learn what TDEE means, why activity settings create wildly different results, and how two weeks of weigh-ins can improve any calculator estimate.
Your TDEE is the average number of calories you burn in a day. A calculator can give you a useful starting range, but it cannot measure your exact daily burn from age, height and weight alone. If two calculators disagree by 300 calories, the usual culprit is the activity assumption—not a broken metabolism.
Start conservatively, keep food and weigh-ins reasonably consistent for two weeks, and update the estimate from what your body actually did.
What makes up TDEE
Total daily energy expenditure has four parts:
- Resting energy expenditure: keeping your brain, heart, lungs and other tissues running. This is usually the largest part.
- Thermic effect of food: energy used to digest and process what you eat.
- Planned exercise: the run, lifting session, bike ride or class you chose to do.
- Everything else you do: walking to the car, standing, cleaning, fidgeting and changing posture. This unglamorous movement can vary a lot.
Most public calculators estimate the first part with an equation and roll the other three into one activity multiplier. The popular Mifflin–St Jeor equation uses weight, height, age and biological sex to estimate resting expenditure. The original study included 498 adults and reported meaningful individual variation around the estimate. It was never a device strapped to your metabolism.
The activity multiplier is where the gap opens
Suppose a 40-year-old man at 90 kg and 180 cm has an estimated BMR of 1,830 kcal:
10 × 90 + 6.25 × 180 − 5 × 40 + 5 = 1,830 kcal
Now watch the same body produce three answers:

That is an 824-kcal spread without changing his body at all.
Many calculators use labels such as “lightly active” or “moderately active.” Those labels are easy to read emotionally. Three demanding workouts feel like an active life, but a desk job, car commute and quiet weekend can still produce a low average movement level.
Pick the lower plausible multiplier at first. If your real data says you burn more, adding food later is a pleasant correction. Starting with an inflated TDEE can erase the intended deficit while making the plan look perfect on paper.
BMR, RMR and TDEE are not interchangeable
BMR is basal metabolic rate under strict laboratory conditions. RMR is resting metabolic rate under slightly less strict conditions. In everyday calculators the terms often get blurred, and the practical difference is small compared with uncertainty in activity and food intake.
TDEE includes the whole day. Do not subtract a deficit from BMR. Your body does not spend 24 hours lying motionless in a lab.
And do not multiply BMR by an activity factor, then add all of your normal workouts again. If the factor was meant to include them, that is double-counting. Either use a low baseline and add measured exercise carefully, or use an average activity level and treat the target as already inclusive.
Why a watch is not the final answer
Wearables are useful for steps, trends and reminders. Their calorie-burn estimates are much less dependable. A systematic review of wrist-worn trackers found substantial error in energy-expenditure estimates across brands and activities. Heart rate, wrist motion and demographic inputs can narrow the guess, but a watch still does not directly measure every component of TDEE.
Use wearable calories consistently, not literally. If your watch says a familiar walk is usually 260 kcal, the trend can help compare days. It does not mean you earned exactly 260 extra calories of food.
The same restraint applies to gym machines. Body weight entered correctly does not turn a treadmill display into a metabolic chamber.
Calculate TDEE from real weight change
The clean idea is energy balance: if average intake is below average expenditure, body energy stores decline. In real life, short-term scale change also includes water, glycogen and food in the gut, so one week is noisy. Two weeks is a minimum; four is better.
Here is a worked example. Someone logs an average of 2,050 kcal/day for 14 days. Their seven-day average weight falls from 84.4 kg to 84.0 kg—a 0.4 kg change.
Using the rough conversion of 7,700 kcal per kilogram:
0.4 × 7,700 ÷ 14 = 220 kcal/day
Estimated TDEE is therefore:
2,050 intake + 220 deficit = about 2,270 kcal/day
Do not pretend 2,270 is exact. The intake log may miss oil, the weight window is short, and the energy content of weight change is dynamic. Treat it as a revised range—perhaps 2,150–2,400—and keep collecting data.
If weight is stable over a well-logged four weeks, average intake is a practical estimate of current TDEE. If weight changes, the direction and rate tell you roughly how far intake sits from maintenance.
A better correction routine
Use the same morning weigh-in conditions when possible. Compare rolling seven-day averages. Then ask:
- Did I log at least two eating occasions on most days?
- Did I include cooking oil, sauces, alcohol, drinks and small bites?
- Were restaurant portions estimated rather than measured?
- Did a new training block, menstrual-cycle phase, high-sodium weekend or constipation shift water?
- Has body weight already fallen enough that maintenance needs are lower?

When the formula is a poor fit
Generic calculators are for general adult planning. They need extra care for very muscular athletes, people at extremes of body size, older adults with low lean mass, people recovering from illness, and anyone pregnant or breastfeeding. Medications and health conditions can affect appetite, fluid balance, activity or weight.
Indirect calorimetry can measure resting expenditure more directly, but even that does not automatically produce free-living TDEE. When the stakes are medical, use a clinician or registered dietitian rather than squeezing more decimals from a web calculator.

What is a good TDEE calculator?
One that shows its equation and activity assumptions. The NIH Body Weight Planner is useful because it models changing energy needs over time. Whichever calculator you use, treat the output as a starting range and validate it with consistent intake and weight data.
Can my TDEE change from day to day?
Yes. Exercise, steps, work, sleep and spontaneous movement change. For planning, you want a weekly or multi-week average, not Tuesday's supposedly exact burn.
Is TDEE the calories I should eat to lose weight?
No. TDEE is estimated maintenance. A weight-loss target is usually TDEE minus a manageable deficit, while respecting an appropriate lower limit and your health needs.
