BMI calculator: your number, and what BMI misses

Calculate adult BMI in metric or imperial units, see the screening category, and understand what muscle, waist size and weight history change.

Your numbers, worked out.

Estimates for adults 20 and over, not medical advice. Not built for pregnancy, breastfeeding or eating-disorder care. Your numbers stay on this page until you choose to send them to the coach.

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. At 80 kg and 1.70 m, that is 27.7. The adult screening category is “overweight.” That tells you how weight compares with height; it does not tell you how much muscle you have or what you should eat tomorrow.

What the categories mean

Adult BMI Screening category
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 to below 25 Healthy weight
25 to below 30 Overweight
30 to below 35 Obesity, class 1
35 to below 40 Obesity, class 2
40 and above Obesity, class 3

These are the standard adult screening bands, and a band is not a diagnosis. The calculator uses the CDC adult age range of 20 and older; children and teenagers need age- and sex-specific charts. CDC adult BMI categories

The category uses the unrounded result. A number just below 25 may display as 25.0 after rounding while still falling below the category boundary. That tiny distinction is a reminder that a cutoff is not a biological cliff.

The same BMI can describe different bodies

Imagine two people who are both 170 cm and 80 kg. One has spent years strength training; the other has little muscle and a larger waist. Both get 27.7.

BMI cannot distinguish those situations. It also cannot show where fat is distributed, whether weight changed quickly, or whether someone is eating adequately. That is why “healthy weight” is the name of a screening band, not a certificate of health.

Read the number beside your waist size, activity, strength, blood pressure and medical history. A clinician weighs all of that, and for some people and situations will read the risk differently; if so, their reading beats this one number. CDC on BMI as a screening tool

A worked example in both unit systems

Suppose you enter 176.37 lb and 66.93 inches. The calculator converts pounds to kilograms and inches to centimetres first:

  • 176.37 lb is approximately 80 kg.
  • 66.93 inches is approximately 170 cm.
  • 80 ÷ 1.70² is approximately 27.7.

Switching units should change the inputs' labels and values, not your result. Height in the imperial version is total inches: 5 ft 7 in is 67 inches. Entering 5.7 is not the same height.

Use a recent weight and a measured height if possible. Shoes, rounding and an old remembered height can move the number enough to matter near a boundary.

What to do with the result

If you want to change your weight, the first question is whether that goal makes sense for you, and BMI alone cannot answer it. The lifter at 27.7 and the person with the larger waist at 27.7 do not need the same plan.

If it does make sense, your day-to-day tools are food, protein, activity and a realistic trend. Our calorie calculator gives you a starting food target. The body fat calculator offers a second, differently imperfect view from tape measurements.

The ideal weight calculator shows how broad the BMI-based weight range is. It should help you question a single “perfect weight,” not give you another number to chase.

When this calculator is the wrong tool

The adult bands do not fit a child. Pregnancy, recent illness, edema and other changes can also make a simple height-to-weight comparison misleading. If your weight is changing and you do not know why, that is a conversation with a clinician, not a reason to recalculate BMI.

If tracking body numbers makes you anxious or pushes you toward restriction, step back. You can work on regular meals, strength and the rest of your health without checking a BMI result every week.

FAQ

Is BMI calculated differently for women and men?

The adult BMI formula is the same. Sex affects some other estimates, such as resting energy and circumference-based body fat, but not the weight-over-height-squared calculation.

Does a healthy BMI mean I am healthy?

No. It puts you in a screening band. Fitness, fat distribution and medical history all count, and BMI measures none of them.

How often should I calculate BMI?

Not often. It moves only when your weight moves, and a day of water weight does not deserve a new health judgment.

The easy way to do this

BMI gives you a category; HeyCoach works with the numbers underneath it. Tell the coach your goal and it sets your calorie and protein targets in about 30 seconds, then a photo or one line logs each meal in the WhatsApp chat you already have open. Send a weigh-in when you like; it remembers your goal and keeps the trend in the same conversation. BMI can stay an occasional reference instead of becoming another dashboard to watch.
